Almost every conversation about driving less starts in the wrong place. It starts with the commute, because the commute is the trip people resent most. But the commute is often the hardest trip to replace: it is fixed in time, frequently long, and sometimes the only realistic option is the car.
The trips worth attacking first are the ones nobody thinks about. The three-mile round trip to the shop. The school run. Dropping something off. Federal travel surveys have consistently found that a large share of car journeys are very short, close to half under about three miles, and those short trips are where cars are at their worst.
Why short car trips are so inefficient
A cold engine is an inefficient engine. Catalytic converters do not work properly until warm, and a petrol car burns noticeably more fuel per mile in the first few minutes than it does once up to temperature. On a two-mile trip, a large share of the journey happens before the car is working properly at all.
Electric cars avoid the cold-start emissions problem, but they do not avoid the others: a two-tonne vehicle still needs a lane to move through and a space to park at both ends, and it still sheds tyre particulates. The road space and parking demand of a short car trip are identical whether the drivetrain is electric or not.
Do the audit before you buy anything
Before spending money on any alternative, spend two weeks writing down every trip you take: where, how far, why, and whether anything was carried. Most people find the same pattern. A handful of long, unavoidable journeys, and a surprising number of short ones that exist mostly out of habit.
That list tells you what to buy, if anything. Someone whose short trips involve carrying children needs a different answer from someone whose short trips are solo errands, and both are different from someone whose only pain point is a nine-mile commute.
Matching the trip to the tool
- Under a mile, nothing heavy. Walking is almost always faster than it feels once you count parking at both ends.
- One to three miles. A regular bicycle, if the terrain is reasonable. No purchase decision here is complicated.

- Short trips with children or a full shop. A cargo bike is the tool that genuinely replaces a second car for this, though the choice on Amazon is thinner than it should be.
- One to four miles, tight storage, mixed with transit. An electric scooter or a folding e-bike.
- Long, rural, or carrying a lot regularly. Keep the car. Consider making it electric when it needs replacing.
The second car is the real decision
For most households the single biggest change available is not the first car, it is the second one. A second car carries the full fixed costs of ownership, insurance, depreciation, registration, and is typically driven the fewest miles, which makes its cost per mile the worst in the household by a wide margin.

Be realistic about what changes
Nobody replaces every trip, and pretending otherwise is why a lot of well-intentioned plans collapse in the first wet fortnight. The realistic target is not zero driving. It is replacing the third of your trips that are short, repetitive and easy, keeping the car for the rest, and noticing after a few months that the car is being driven half as much as it used to be.
