E-Bikes
For most people, an e-bike is the single highest-leverage swap you can make: it replaces the short car trips that make up the bulk of driving, cuts your costs by thousands a year, and is genuinely fun. This hub covers how to choose one, our tested picks, and the real numbers.

How to think about buying an e-bike
Four things decide whether you will love a commuter e-bike: the sensor type (torque feels natural, cadence is cheaper), the brakes (insist on hydraulic disc), the honest measured range (assume 50 to 70 percent of the claim), and the included safety kit (lights and fenders should not be upsells). Weight matters only if you carry the bike. Get those right and almost any reputable brand will serve you well.
Popular use cases
- Commuting 3 to 12 miles: a torque-sensor commuter with lights and fenders.
- Family and grocery hauling: a longtail or front-loader cargo bike.
- Small spaces and multimodal trips: a compact folding e-bike.
