For most families the longtail format is the right shape: it rides like a slightly long bicycle, fits in a normal garage, and costs far less than a front-loader. Budget for accessories, because seats, running boards, and bags are what make the bike usable and they are rarely included.

We said at the top that cargo is a thin category on Amazon, because the established cargo brands sell direct. This is the one we would actually buy, and it is the clearest example on this site of a bike we cannot earn from but would still recommend first on merit.

Why it is worth the gap: three things the Amazon field cannot match. A torque sensor rather than a cadence sensor, which on a heavily loaded bike is the difference between smooth power and being shoved forward at every pedal stroke. A 203mm rear rotor, which is the correct answer for stopping 440 lb. And certification to both UL 2849 and UL 2271, verified by two bodies, on a bike that will be charged in a garage with children riding on the back.

The honest con: 88 lb is genuinely heavy, and its 733Wh battery gives a shorter claimed range than the 960Wh EUYBIKE above. Aventon publishes the caveat behind its own range figure, which we respect: it is measured with a 165 lb rider on flat, paved road in Eco mode. Loaded with a passenger and shopping, expect considerably less.

Skip it if: your budget is the binding constraint. The certified ADDMOTOR above is the sensible compromise, and we can earn from it, which is precisely why we are telling you this one is better.

Why it is here: 90 Nm is the most torque of any cargo bike on this page, which is the specification that matters when pulling away from a junction with a loaded rack. Rad also names the exact battery cells, and publishes an unusually honest footnote that actual power to the ground is under 750W despite the rated figure. That kind of caveat is rare and we rate it.

The honest con: it is the most expensive bike in this guide, its 375 lb payload is lower than the Aventon Abound at 440 lb, and the 120 lb rack limit is the tightest of the certified options. The removable battery is externally mounted rather than integrated, which some find less tidy.

How we picked. These recommendations come from research, not from us riding every bike. We compared published specifications, warranty and support terms, and the weight of expert and long-term owner reviews. We have not personally ridden every bike here, and we say so plainly rather than imply otherwise.

Longtail or front-loader?

This is the first decision, and it matters more than the brand.

A longtail stretches the rear of the bike into a long deck behind the rider. Kids or cargo sit behind you. It handles almost like a normal bicycle, so the learning curve is short, it is easier to store, and it is generally cheaper. The downside is that you cannot see your passengers, and very long loads are awkward.

A front-loader (bakfiets or box bike) puts a large box between the rider and the front wheel. You can see the kids, talk to them, and load bulky items easily. The trade-offs are real: the steering feels strange for the first week because the front wheel is far away and often linked by a rod, they are long and heavy to store, and they cost considerably more.

Simple rule: one or two school-age kids and groceries, buy a longtail. Multiple small children, a dog, or genuinely bulky loads, and the front-loader earns its price.

What to look for

We are not naming picks here yet, on purpose. The cargo e-bikes we rate most highly are sold direct by their manufacturers rather than through the retailers we can link to, and we would rather publish no recommendation than point you at a worse bike because it happens to be easier for us to link. When that changes, this section will name specific models. In the meantime, the criteria below are what we would use to choose one ourselves.

What to check before you buy

  • Total payload capacity, not just the rear rack rating. Add your weight, the passengers, and the cargo, then compare against the bike’s stated maximum.
  • Brakes. On a bike that may carry 400+ pounds fully loaded, hydraulic discs are not optional. Larger rotors or four-piston calipers exist on cargo bikes for exactly this reason.
  • Storage reality. Measure before ordering. A longtail is roughly one to two feet longer than a normal bike; a front-loader considerably more. Check you can get it through every gate and door on the way in.
  • Motor and hills. A loaded cargo bike on a hill is the hardest job in e-biking. If you live somewhere steep, prioritise torque over top speed.
  • The accessory budget. Seats, safety rails, running boards, panniers, and a rain cover can add several hundred dollars. Price the complete setup, not the bike.
  • A serious lock. Cargo bikes are valuable and conspicuous. Budget for a good lock and decide where it lives overnight.

On a bike that carries children and charges in a garage or hallway, that is the specification we would not trade away. ADDMOTOR is also an established cargo-bike brand rather than an unbranded import, and hydraulic brakes are the right choice on a bike that may be carrying 300 lb of rider, passenger and shopping.

The honest con: three owner ratings. The certification is documented and the brand has a track record, but nobody has publicly reported how this specific model holds up over a year. The 75 mile range figure is also measured at assist level 1, which is barely any assistance at all.

Skip it if: you need the longest possible range between charges. The EUYBIKE below carries a third more battery, though without the certification.

Why it earned this spot: at 960Wh this is the largest battery on the page, roughly a third more capacity than the ADDMOTOR, and range is the specification cargo riders run out of first once a passenger and a full load are involved. The step-through frame matters too: swinging a leg over a loaded longtail is exactly when these bikes get dropped. Seat suspension on top of a front fork is unusual at this level and makes a real difference on a bike with a rigid rear end.

The honest con: no UL 2849 in the listing, and 28 owner ratings is a thin evidence base. The 70 to 80 mile figure is also measured in pedal assist; the throttle-only number of about 35 miles is the one to plan around if you use the throttle, and that is less than half the headline.

Skip it if: you charge indoors, where the certified ADDMOTOR or Vivi are the right answer, or if you regularly carry a second adult up hills. 1450W peak is the least powerful option here for that job.

Who this is NOT for

  • Anyone without secure ground-floor storage. You are not carrying one of these up a flight of stairs, and leaving it outside overnight invites theft.

How many kids can one carry?

Most longtails are set up for two children on the rear deck, subject to the bike’s payload limit and the children’s size. Front-loaders can take more in the box. Check the manufacturer’s stated passenger limit rather than assuming, and use proper seats and safety rails for younger children.

Are they hard to ride?

Longtails feel close to a normal bike and most people adapt within a ride or two. Front-loaders take longer, usually about a week, because the steering geometry is genuinely different. In both cases, practise loaded in a quiet area before your first ride with children aboard.
