The affordable option: what you can safely spend less on

Most charger guides push you toward 48A hardwired units. For a lot of households that is more charger than the situation needs, and the extra cost is not only the unit: a 48A charger needs a 60A circuit, which is exactly what triggers an expensive panel upgrade.

Here is what is safe to economise on, and what is not.

Safe to give up

  • 48 amps. A 40A charger adds roughly 40 miles of range per hour. Parked overnight, almost nobody uses more.
  • Hardwiring. A plug-in unit into an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet can avoid electrical work entirely.
  • Smart features. Scheduling is useful on a time-of-use tariff and irrelevant otherwise. Most cars schedule charging themselves.
  • Brand name. Certification matters. The badge does not.

Never give up

  • Safety certification. Look for UL listed or ETL certified to UL 2594, the standard for EV charging equipment. An uncertified charger drawing 40 amps continuously for hours, in the rain, is not where to save money.
  • A weather rating if it lives outdoors. IP65 or better.
  • Proper installation. The circuit is not the place to economise, whatever the charger costs.

Skip it if: you need scheduling for a narrow off-peak tariff, or the charger must reach across a driveway. Length is the constraint people underestimate.

Frequently asked questions

How many amps do I actually need?

For most drivers, 40 to 48 amps is the sweet spot and will fully recharge a typical commute overnight many times over. Higher amperage only helps if your car can accept it and your panel can supply it. A charger with adjustable amperage is the safe buy when you are unsure.

Do I need a smart charger?

Only if you will use the features. The real payoff is scheduling charging for off-peak electricity rates, which can save meaningful money over a year. If your utility has flat rates and your charger lives outdoors in a harsh climate, a simpler rugged unit is the better buy.

NACS or J1772, which connector should I get?

Match your car. J1772 has been the long-standing standard for non-Tesla EVs in North America, while the industry is transitioning toward NACS. Adapters exist in both directions, and some chargers are offered in either configuration, so check your vehicle’s port before ordering.

Neither is essential on day one, but both solve problems that show up in the first month.

An adapter, if your car and charger use different connectors

North America is mid-transition between J1772 and NACS (Tesla) connectors, and an adapter is what keeps a charger useful across that change. If you drive a Tesla but buy a J1772 charger, this is the missing piece. It is also worth having if you expect to change cars before you change chargers.

Check the direction before ordering. Adapters are not reversible: a J1772-to-Tesla adapter is a different product from a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter, and ordering the wrong one is the most common mistake here.

The honest con: adapters add a connection point, and cheap ones can overheat under sustained current. Buy one rated for the amperage your charger actually delivers rather than the cheapest listing, and check it is properly certified.

A wall mount holder for the cable

A charging cable left coiled on the garage floor gets driven over, stepped on, and dragged through water. A holder costs very little and prevents the slow damage that eventually kills a connector.

Mount it so the cable hangs in a loose loop rather than a tight bend, because repeated sharp bending is what breaks the conductors inside the sheath.
