The short answer

An EV almost always costs less per mile to fuel and to maintain than a comparable gas car, and the maintenance saving is the one people underestimate. Where the picture gets muddier is insurance, depreciation, and tires, which can run higher. The single biggest variable is whether you charge at home: home charging is where the running-cost advantage lives, and relying on public fast charging erodes much of it.

Fuel: the obvious win

To compare honestly, work in cost per mile rather than cost per fill.

For an EV: take your electricity rate in dollars per kWh, and divide by the car’s efficiency in miles per kWh. A car doing 3.5 miles per kWh on a 15 cent rate costs roughly 4 cents a mile.

For a gas car: divide the price per gallon by the mpg. A 30 mpg car at $3.50 a gallon costs about 12 cents a mile.

Those are illustrative numbers, and yours will differ, but the shape of the result holds across most of the country: home charging is dramatically cheaper per mile. Two things change it. Time-of-use rates can cut your cost substantially if you charge overnight, which is the single easiest saving available to an EV owner. Public fast charging is priced much closer to gasoline, so if it is your primary method the advantage narrows sharply.

Maintenance: the underrated win

An EV drivetrain simply has far fewer things to service. There are no oil changes, no spark plugs, no fuel filters, no timing belt, no exhaust or emissions system, and no transmission fluid in the conventional sense.

Brakes deserve a special mention. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes are used far less. EV brake pads routinely last much longer than on a comparable gas car, and that is a real recurring saving. The ironic maintenance item is that brakes sometimes need attention from underuse, such as corrosion, particularly in areas with road salt.

What you still pay for: tires, cabin air filters, wiper blades, brake fluid, coolant for the battery thermal system, and suspension wear.

Where EVs cost more

The honest bottom line

For a driver who charges at home and keeps the car for years, an EV’s total running costs are usually meaningfully lower, with fuel and maintenance doing the heavy lifting. For someone without home charging who relies on fast chargers, the case is much weaker and worth working through carefully with your own numbers.

What people forget to count

An honest summary

An EV with home charging is meaningfully cheaper to run than a comparable petrol car: much cheaper fuel, much cheaper servicing, offset partly by tyres and insurance. That is a real and repeatable saving.

An EV without home charging is a more marginal financial case, and should be chosen for other reasons: quietness, local air quality, or simply preferring how it drives.
