3. A tow-bar platform carrier
The scooter sits on a platform attached to the tow hitch, outside the car.

- The catch: the scooter is exposed to rain, road salt and dirt. The vehicle becomes longer, which changes parking and reversing. 4. Ramps, a van, or an accessible vehicle
The scooter or wheelchair is driven straight in, either up portable ramps into a van, or into a purpose-converted vehicle with a lowered floor.
- Best for: power wheelchairs, heavy-duty scooters, and anyone who needs to stay seated in the device during the journey.
- Cost: the highest by a wide margin, particularly a full conversion.
- The catch: it is also the only option that works for the heaviest equipment. If that is your situation, the other three are not really choices.
The measurements to take before you buy anything
Take these with a tape measure and write them down. Every decision below follows from them.
- Heaviest single piece of the scooter, in pounds. Not the total.
- Boot aperture height and width — the actual opening, not the space inside it.
- Boot floor height from the ground. This is the one people forget, and it is what decides how hard lifting will be.
- Interior boot depth with the seats up, and with them down.
- Longest and widest piece of the dismantled scooter.
- Tow bar rating, if you are considering a carrier.
An SUV is often worse, not better. The opening is usually wider, which sounds promising, but the load floor sits much higher off the ground. Lifting 40 lb to chest height is a very different task from sliding it into a low estate car boot. Measure the height before assuming the bigger vehicle wins.
The lifting risk nobody mentions in the sales listing
This deserves saying plainly, because it is usually the spouse or the adult child who ends up doing it.
Repeatedly lifting 30 to 50 lb components at arm’s length, over a lip, while twisting, is one of the most reliable ways to injure a back. It is not a question of strength. It is repetition and posture, and it accumulates.
If loading will happen more than occasionally, price a hoist or a carrier against the cost of a caregiver being unable to lift anything for six weeks. That comparison usually settles it.
Practical reductions that cost nothing: remove the battery pack first where the scooter allows it, which takes a meaningful chunk out of the heaviest piece; load the heaviest section first while you are fresh; and if there is any choice of vehicle in the household, use the one with the lowest boot floor.

The mistake is comparing those figures in isolation. The right comparison includes how often you will load, who will be doing it, and what happens to the household if that person is injured.
