Hardwired vs Plug-In EV Charger
The short answer
Choose plug-in if you might move, want to swap the charger easily, or want the simpler install. Choose hardwired if you are running the highest amperage, installing outdoors, or want the cleanest and most permanent setup. For a typical 40A garage install, plug-in is the more flexible choice. For a 48A or outdoor install, hardwired is usually the better one.
What the difference actually is
A plug-in charger ends in a plug, usually a NEMA 14-50 (the same heavy-duty outlet used for RV hookups and electric ranges). Your electrician installs the outlet; you plug the charger in yourself.
A hardwired charger has its cable connected permanently into the circuit inside the unit. There is no plug and no outlet. It is a fixed part of the house’s wiring.
Plug-in: pros and cons
The case for it: flexibility. If the charger fails, you unplug it and plug in a new one with no electrician involved. If you move, you can take it with you and leave behind an outlet that adds value for the next owner. The install is often simpler and, in some jurisdictions, easier to permit. An outlet is also useful for other things, which matters in a workshop or when camping equipment needs power.
The case against: most plug-in units are limited to 40A, because a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50A circuit is rated for 40A of continuous load. If you want 48A, you generally need hardwiring. The plug-and-outlet connection is also one more point that can loosen or corrode over years of heat cycling, and cheap outlets have been a documented failure point under sustained EV load. If you go plug-in, insist on an industrial-grade outlet rather than the cheapest one that fits.
Hardwired: pros and cons
The case for it: it supports the highest amperage, which is the main reason people choose it. It removes the outlet as a failure point, it is tidier, and it is generally the right call outdoors because there is no plug connection exposed to weather. It is also the more secure option, since the unit cannot simply be unplugged and walked away with.
The case against: replacing or upgrading the charger means calling an electrician again, and you cannot take it with you easily when you move. You are committing to that unit in that spot.
Which should you pick?
- Renting, or moving within a few years: plug-in, clearly.
- Indoor garage, 40A is plenty: plug-in, for the flexibility.
- Outdoor mounting: hardwired, for weather resistance.
- You want the full 48A: hardwired, because most plug-in units cannot deliver it.
- Street-facing or shared parking: hardwired, for security.
- You want to future-proof: plug-in, because swapping in a better charger later costs nothing in labour.
One practical note: several manufacturers sell the same charger in both configurations, and some ship hardwire-capable units with a plug you can remove. If you are undecided, buying a model that supports both leaves the decision open until the electrician is standing in your garage.
A safety note
Whichever you choose, this is licensed-electrician work. Sustained EV charging is a continuous high-current load, which is precisely the condition that exposes undersized wire, a cheap outlet, or a loose termination. Pull the permit and get the inspection.
