What EV Charger Installation Actually Costs

The short answer

The charger is the predictable part of this purchase. The install is the variable, and it is driven almost entirely by two things: whether your electrical panel has spare capacity, and how far the charger sits from that panel. A simple job (spare capacity, charger mounted near the panel) is at the low end. A hard job (full panel, long cable run, trenching under a driveway) can cost several times more than the charger itself. Get the panel assessed before you buy hardware.

What you are actually paying for

A Level 2 install is a 240V circuit: a dedicated breaker in your panel, wire from the panel to where the car parks, and either an outlet or a hardwired connection at the end. The cost breaks into five parts.

1. Panel capacity, the big one

Your panel has a total amperage rating and a finite number of breaker slots. A 48A charger needs a 60A breaker, which is a substantial share of a smaller panel’s capacity.

If you have spare capacity and a free slot, this part is cheap. If your panel is full or too small, you are looking at either a subpanel or a full service upgrade, and a service upgrade is a different order of expense entirely because it can involve the utility, permits, and a meter change. This single factor explains most of the wild variation in quotes people report.

Worth knowing: if your panel is tight, a lower-amperage charger or a load-management device can avoid an upgrade entirely. A 32A charger still fully recharges most cars overnight. This is the single best way to save money on an EV charging install, and it costs you almost nothing in real-world convenience.

2. Distance and the wire run

Thick copper wire is expensive, and labour scales with difficulty. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is the cheapest possible job. Every additional consideration adds cost: running through finished walls, crossing the house, going outside, or trenching under a driveway to reach a detached garage. Trenching in particular can dominate the whole bill.

3. Permits and inspection

Most jurisdictions require a permit and an inspection for a new 240V circuit. The fee is usually modest. Do not skip it: unpermitted electrical work can void insurance claims and cause problems when you sell the house, and the inspection is what confirms the work is safe.

4. Indoor vs outdoor

Outdoor installs need weather-rated equipment and more careful mounting and sealing. If the charger lives outside in a cold climate, that also shapes which hardware you should buy, favouring rugged units over feature-rich ones.

How to avoid overpaying

  • Get three quotes. EV charger installs vary more between electricians than almost any other household electrical job, because they differ in how much they have done.
  • Ask specifically about your panel in the first phone call. If an electrician quotes without knowing your panel’s capacity, that quote is a guess.
  • Check utility and state rebates before you buy. Many utilities offer meaningful rebates on equipment or installation, and some require you to apply before the work is done or to use an approved installer. Applying afterwards can disqualify you.
  • Consider lower amperage. Ask what the job costs at 48A versus 32A. If the cheaper circuit avoids a panel upgrade, you will likely never notice the difference in daily use.
  • Mount it where the cable reaches easily. Plan around where the car’s charge port sits and how you park. A cheap install in the wrong place becomes an annoyance you live with for years.
  • Do it while other electrical work is happening. If you are already upgrading a panel or renovating, the marginal cost drops considerably.

A safety note

This is not a DIY job unless you are a qualified electrician. A 240V circuit at 40 to 60 amps running for hours at a time is exactly the kind of load that punishes an undersized wire or a loose connection, and the failure mode is a fire. Frequently asked questions

Can I just use the outlet already in my garage?

Only if it is a 240V outlet on a dedicated circuit of adequate rating. A standard 120V outlet gives you Level 1 charging, which is slow but genuinely sufficient for some drivers. An existing dryer outlet is sometimes usable but sharing it is not ideal, and an electrician should confirm the circuit can handle continuous EV load.

Do I need a panel upgrade?

Is it worth it if I might move?
